Lincoln soldier surprises mother by returning home from deployment for Christmas

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)– Sgt. Kate Cole surprised her mother, Kris Cole, by returning home from her deployment in the Middle East in time for Christmas.

Sgt. Cole is a combat medical specialist with Charlie Troop 1-134 Cavalry Squadron with the Nebraska National Guard. Her mom, Kris, is a nurse in the post-anesthesia care unit at Bryan Health.

Last February, Sgt. Cole deployed to the Middle East where she has served for the past ten months. Sgt. Cole and 90 of her fellow troops returned home to Nebraska after completing their mission, but Sgt. Cole told her mom that her tour was extended and she wouldn’t be returning home with her fellow soldiers.

Just before Christmas, she surprised her mom with an emotional visit at the end of her shift at Bryan East Campus. It was the first time they had seen each other in ten months.

“I wanted to get around that corner as quickly as possible and just see her and hug her, and tell her I’m sorry I’ve lied to her all this time,” Sgt. Cole said.

Kris couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her.
