LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – School officials on Thursday announced a football game between Gretna High and Lincoln Southeast has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

The athletic departments from both schools issued a statement saying, “We feel this is in the best interest of all students and their families. Students on both teams have worked especially hard to get to this point, and we don’t want to jeopardize any opportunities for post-season play.”

A specific number of cases was not provided, with a news release saying only “the rising number of COVID-19 cases.”

The game will not be rescheduled.
An LPS spokesperson told Channel 8 Eyewitness News no other LPS competitions will be impacted.
Gretna High School hosted a coronavirus pop-up test site for students and staff on Thursday after over 40 positive cases were traced to a large gathering on October 3.

The Sarpy/Cass Health Department says the event was a non-school sanctioned homecoming dance. Those who attended the event are being told to quarantine at home until October 18 and be tested for coronavirus.
