Lincoln students read more than 7 million minutes this summer
Saltdogs help them celebrate their love of learning

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Libraries System and Lincoln Saltdogs came together for another summer to sponsor a reading program for students.
The program, which began earlier this summer, encouraged kids to read for at least 10 hours during their break from school. The reward? Free tickets to the July 31st Saltdogs game.
Reading over the summer is a great way to keep kids’ brains active over the summer months while they aren’t sitting at desks.
“Reading is so important for children, especially during the summer where they may be out of school and out of the education mode,” said read-aloud librarian Ali Bousquet. “We encourage them to read, keep their brains active and keep their brains going over the summer.”
The Saltdogs and libraries have been partnering together for many years and provide a great way for players to interact with the kids in the community.
“It’s a great segue for the kids throughout the summer to get ready for school coming into the fall,” said Saltdogs general manager Charlie Meyer. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the community and for the kids to have some fun over the summer.”
The kids who took part in the program got to celebrate their accomplishment of reading more than 7 million minutes by walking on the field before sitting in the berm and enjoying some baseball.
Meyer said they got to work with more than 15,000 kids for this year’s program, and every single one of them got tickets to the Saltdogs game.
