Lincoln summer camps adjusting schedules amid heat wave

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Many changed their plans Monday because of the heat have, including local summer camps.

Kids at Fallbrook YMCA spent most of their time inside.

“We adjusted our schedules so that kids can do inside activities so that they’re indoors and in the air conditioning,” Executive Director Emmalie Wilcox said.

A group of kids went to the zoo in the morning, and the Y took steps to protect them.

“We did everything we could to make sure that our staff was prepared to keep those kids hydrated and healthy,” Wilcox said. “We had the staff have the kids do most of the inside exhibits.”

She said the staff at the YMCA is trained for this.

“Part of that water watcher training is how to see signs of potential heatstroke or heat exhaustion so that we can look for those signs and be proactive in preventing that as much as possible,” Wilcox said.

She said the Y will monitor the weather for the rest of the week and make adjustments as needed.
