The shooting happened early in the morning of Dec. 24, when McDaniel was 16, outside an apartment complex near 14th and Superior streets.
Court documents say McDaniel saw a “masked figure” and fired 15 rounds from an assault rifle toward the person.
The man was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he died.
He turned out to be McDaniel’s own brother, 20-year-old Johnathan McCray.

McDaniel told police that he was armed because he was assaulted the week before and feared for his safety.
He said he would not have fired if he knew the masked man was his brother.
McDaniel is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 3.
