Lincolnites fed up with street racers, say they’re ‘asking for a lot of trouble’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Families living near busy Lincoln roads are frustrated with street racers.

Shane Swanson has lived near O Street for two years, and he said the “loud bangs” from the racers is never-ending.

He and others who live along O Street said the racket keeps them up at night.

“I’d say it’s most nights or a lot of nights,” Swanson said. “You just kind of get used to it after a certain point.”

Another hot spot for speeders and racers is 70th Street between Pioneers Boulevard and A Street, according to people in the area.

A woman who has lived near 70th and Van Dorn streets for 22 years said she can see and hear cars speeding by.

“It’s not the place for it,” said the woman, who wanted to be anonymous. “There are racetracks for people who have that hobby, and that’s where they should get it out of their system.”

The woman said it’s dangerous for the racers and anyone else on the road.

“That’s a choice they’re making,” she said. “That’s asking for a lot of trouble, I think. You can’t stop as fast, your spacing is different when you’re at that speed.”

A spokeswoman from the Lincoln Police Department said people can fill out a traffic request form on its website to report any problems.

The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department said its top priority is keeping streets safe.

The department said it’s taken multiple steps to slow down traffic.
