Live hand grenade dug up in Lancaster County, sheriff’s office says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A city worker found a live hand grenade while he was digging to fix a signpost, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says.

Around 2:30 p.m., Waverly Fire Department and deputies arrived at the area near 148th Street and Waverly Road.

The worker who found the grenade originally thought it was a piece of concrete, the sheriff’s office says.

The Nebraska State Patrol bomb squad then called in the Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.  They were able to confirm that it was a live grenade.

The disposal team detonated the grenade around 4:30 p.m. in the middle of a field.

This caused traffic in the area to be stopped for around 2 hours, the sheriff’s office says.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to call law enforcement if they find a suspected explosive device.
