Nebraska defense gives up 642 yards of total offense in loss to Georgia Southern

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Georgia Southern defeated Nebraska 45-42 on Saturday night in a poor defensive performance.
The Huskers gave up 642 yards of total offense – the third most ever allowed by a Nebraska defense and the most since UCLA put up 653 yards in 2012.
Head Coach Scott Frost commented on what went wrong defensively.
“Just looking at it, they got inside of us on slants when it was supposed to be inside technique,” Frost said. “Broke a couple tackles. I said at halftime we don’t have enough eyes on the ball in a couple of our coverages, and guys not running well after the ball enough. There were some tunnel screens on us that we didn’t get back out of it on the defensive line. That’s not supposed to happen.”
In this loss the Huskers fall to 15-3 all-time against current members of the Sun Belt Conference.
Running back Anthony Grant rushed 27 times for 138 yards and one touchdown, marking Grant’s third straight game to open the season with more than 100 rushing yards.
Grant is the first Husker to rush for 100 yards in the first three games of a season since Taylor Martinez in 2010, and he is the first Husker running back to rush for 100 yards in the first three games since Dan Alexander in 2000.
Quarterback Casey Thompson threw for 318 yards, his fifth career 300-yard passing game and second at Nebraska and Thompson also rushed for 31 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns, including a career-high three rushing touchdowns.
