Local Jersey Mike’s donating 100% of sales to Nebraska Special Olympics team
30 Nebraska athletes will compete in 19 different sports across the weeklong event.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Local Jersey Mike’s are donating 100% of their sales on Wednesday to the Nebraska Special Olympics team.
For 12 years Jersey Mike’s has set aside March as their “Month of Giving.” Last year they raised over $15 million and are hoping to raise even more this year.
Throughout the month, customers have been donating and supporting local athletes in getting to Florida to compete in the 2022 games.
A total of 30 Nebraska athletes will compete in 19 different sports across the weeklong event.
Three athletes from Lincoln will go and 32-year-old Haley Waggoner is one of them. This is her second time participating and says she is glad she joined the Special Olympics 15 years ago.
“I just wanted to join a team, when I was growing up I didn’t have a team. A lot of doctors said I couldn’t do it and I wanted to play with like my brother and sister had a team and I never had a team so joining was just amazing that I finally got to do it,” said Waggoner.
The Special Olympic Games are held every four years, like the traditional Olympics. In the last games, Waggoner won gold for tennis and is hoping to repeat this year.
She also was one of nine people who helped design the official logo for the ’22 games.
The Special Olympic Games will be held in Orlando, Florida from June 5th to the 12th.
