Local rescue warns about getting a puppy for Christmas

With Christmas right around the corner a lot of kids are going to be asking their parents or Santa for a new puppy.

All Hounds On Deck Rescue Nebraska, a local rescue group, has a few things they want you to consider before putting a dog under your tree.

“They really are cute, but what they don’t stop and think about is they’re not going to be house trained, they going to chew up toys, they’re going to grow and get much bigger, puppies require a lot of work,” said Ken Richards, the placement coordinator for All Hounds On Deck Rescue.

The rescue says before getting a puppy you need to consider if you have time for it.

It will have to be potty trained, walked, and taught commands.

They also want parents to consider that their kids will lose interest in the dog after a short period of time and the puppy will become their responsibility.

“Their biggest thing is the amount of time a puppy is going to consume. It’s a full time job, it’s just like having a baby at home, they require that much attention,” Richards said.

Dogs also can add significant expenses to a families budget.

All Hounds On Deck says a family should plan on spend $1,000 or more a year on their dog between good and trips to the vet.

If you are considering getting a dog for Christmas the rescue encourages you to visit a local shelter to adopt.
