Local valet garage will close down in October

For customers of Agee’s Towne Parking, finding a spot downtown wasn’t a sweat.
That was done for them.
"I got a job down here about eight weeks ago and it’s nearby and it’s nice that they take my car for me," said one customer, Brenda Moes.
Co–owner Dick Agee said they are the only valet parking garage left in Lincoln. After more than 60 years of service, he said it’s time to go and they’ll be closing October 5th.
"Economic reasons," Agee said. "The building is up for sale. It’s just time to close it down."
He said they’ve been there since his grandfather built the garage in 1924 and it was later passed down to him.
"As a youngster with my grandparents, going to the old Cornhusker Hotel for dinner and we would park here," Agee said. "And it was a valet garage at that point in time, so that’s 60 years ago."
Agee said he started out there running cars himself and said he lost 25 pounds during his first month.
"It’s great exercise," he said. "Yeah, it gets you in shape very quickly because you have to run up the steps in the afternoon to get the cars."
He said they serve about 160 monthly customers and provide football Saturday parking.
He said those people will have a tough time finding places to park downtown after his business closes.
One of those is Brenda Moes.
"Definitely bummed," Moes said. "They were a great bunch of kids to work with who ran the service and so it’s been a joy working with them. So I’ll miss it."
The feeling’s mutual for those who serve them.
"It’s a disappointment," said valet driver Jeffrey Tyler. "The guys are good, good people and the customers are really good people too."
Agee said hundreds have worked for him over the years and that he’s forged some good friendships and memories.
