Local VFW post marks century of serving Lincoln area vets

VFW Post 131 was founded shortly after World War I and it’s the oldest post in the state.

“Our main mission is to help veterans and veterans’ families,” Post Commander Tony Anton said.

Anton said they’ve been doing just that, including helping vets get benefits through the V.A., pushing for legislation and ordinances that help vets and doing military honors for deceased vets.

Friday night, they’re celebrating that history by holding a banquet at the Graduate Hotel.

“Start out with a little cocktail hour at about 5 o’clock and then from there have a meal,” Anton said.  “And then proceed with the program, talking about the history of Post 131 and what some of our accomplishments were,”

Anton said it’ll be a good way to celebrate the post being 100 years old, after all, he said not all organizations last that long.

Anton said if you’re a vet, come see what the VFW does and perhaps join.
