LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Kayakers and canoers looking to take a trip down the Dismal River may have to change their plans.

Officials said Tuesday that a 12-mile stretch of the river in Thomas County is impassable because of logjams.

Downed trees have fallen into the river between the Seneca bridge and the Jameson bridge, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

People should enter the river at Highway 97 south of Mullen, Game and Parks said, and exit at the Seneca bridge.

The state does not own or manage any part of the river, and much of the land along the river is also privately owned.

The Dismal River winds for about 70 miles through the Nebraska Sandhills and is a popular spot for kayaking.
