LPD Explorers program wins big at competition in St. Louis

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A group of young people from Lincoln are fresh off a big win in a law enforcement competition.

The Lincoln Police Department’s Explorers program gives younger people a look into the world of policing.

The program teaches participants many of the same things that are taught in the police academy.

Drills for traffic stops, crime scene investigations and even active shooter scenarios are just some of the activities the students get to experience.

Last week, the Explorers program went to St. Louis to compete against 19 other agencies just like theirs in many of these drills.

Not only did they compete, but LPD Explorers took home first place in five different categories.

Here’s a list of the placements:

  • 1st: Active shooter
  • 1st: Community problem
  • 1st: Crime scene investigation
  • 1st: Hostage negotiation
  • 1st: Felony car stop
  • 2nd: Officer assist
  • 3rd: Domestic assault

But this program isn’t just about early training for future officers.

“Explorers teaches a lot of skills that aren’t unique to police officers,” Investigator Sara Mueller said. “They can use these skills throughout their life: communication, leadership, teamwork.”

While it has certainly sparked interest in law enforcement for some students, LPD said the program isn’t just a recruitment tactic.

“Exploring is more about building that person, and then they can choose that path from there,” Mueller said.

The program is looking for new members. It’s open to anyone from the ages of 14 to 20, and it’s completely free.

The first meeting of the 2025-26 school year is set for Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at LPD headquarters at 575 S. 10th Street.
