LPD investigating arson along bike trail in south Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Police are investigating a Thursday night arson along a bike trail in south Lincoln.

Around 11:30 p.m., Lincoln Fire & Rescue requested officers to investigate an arson along the bike trail near 33rd Street and Sheridan Boulevard.

Police said a metal can and paper had been set on fire under a tree, causing a small fire in the grass.

The can “erupted and scattered” across the trail, according to police.

A few hours later, officers found a second scene on the bike trail near 27th Street and Nebraska Parkway.

Officers discovered a plastic bottle “stuffed with work gloves and multiple live rounds of ammo,” police said.

The plastic bottle had been set on fire, but a witness extinguished the flames with a jacket.  The device appeared to have been detonated, according to LPD.

An investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with information is asked to call police at 402-441-6000.
