LPD officer shot wanted man twice at north Lincoln hotel, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Police Department provided an update Wednesday on the officer-involved shooting at the Microtel.

Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow said 35-year-old Garrett Hanika was shot twice by an officer Tuesday at the hotel near 25th and Fairfield streets.

Around 12:30 p.m., the officer approached Hanika, who was wanted on a federal warrant out of Council Bluffs, Iowa, police said.

Hanika, who was in a Jeep, reversed and crashed into a police cruiser.

Morrow said Hanika also tried running over the officer, who fired two rounds of shots, striking him.

A 39-year-old woman got out of the Jeep, and Hanika ran her over, trapping her underneath, according to police.

The woman was taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Hanika was treated for two gunshot wounds, one to the head and another to a lower extremity.

“Two rounds of shots were fired, and both were after the vehicle reverses and strikes the cruiser,” Morrow said.

Once medically cleared, he was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault on an officer.

The officer was not injured and has since been placed on administrative leave.

An investigation is ongoing.
