LPD sees dramatic increase in southeast Lincoln burglaries

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) is warning southeast Lincoln residents of an uptick in burglaries.

Apartment garage burglaries

LPD has seen a more than 170% increase in reported apartment complex burglaries between 2019 and 2020. They say most have involved garages, especially cluster garages or garages under the same building.

With 30 burglary reports, 2020 saw a total loss of $20,000. While 2021 is on track to beat last year’s record with 24 reports already made between Jan. and Mar.

In 2019 there were 12 reports where the targeted garages were left unlocked or open.

Again these statistics are only from the southeast area. LPD says most reports are just crimes of opportunity, usually stealing power tools and/or recreational equipment.

Don’t become a target for burglars! LPD strongly suggests all Lincoln residents close and lock their garages when they are not in use.

Another suggestion is to set a burglary alarm as a part of your 9 pm routine.
