LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) have arrested the man suspected of firing shots at a mother and her two sons on Sept. 28.

David Atem, a 20-year-old, has been identified by LPD as the individual who drove up next to the victims SUV and fired several shots at them. This all took place near the 27th St. Walmart.

Atem was taken into custody on Wednesday and arrested for two felony weapon charges.

Authorities are investigating after a woman reported someone fired a gun into her vehicle while she and her two sons were inside.

“It was very scary, I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do, I just went straight to the police station,” said the mother of two.

Lincoln police say the 34-year-old woman flagged down officers at the LPD substation near 27th and Holdrege St. just before 9 p.m. Monday.

The woman reported two vehicles – an SUV and a four-door – followed her and her 13-year-old and 17-year-old sons as they left the 27th St. Walmart.

The SUV pulled up alongside the family’s vehicle and someone inside fired a handgun at them, the woman told police.

“I never expected something like this to happen to us and I’m still shaking from it. I’ve been up all night, I can’t get it out of my mind. I’m just so lucky my son ducked in time,” the mother said.

The 17-year-old was in the backseat and ducked just before the shot was fired, police said. Police say a bullet hole was found in the victim’s vehicle.

“I looked in the back seat and I seen someone hold something. My first instinct was I thought it was a gun and as soon as I saw it, I ducked down and as soon as I ducked, they shot the gun,” said the 17-year-old.

Officers later found the SUV stalled out on the 27th St. bridge and interviewed people inside, learning that several other occupants had run from the scene on foot.

Police say the gun was not found in the vehicle and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning.

The shooting is under investigation.
