LPD: Teens break into three vehicles, officers determining if more occurred

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln police officers were called to the parking lot of Pine Lake Heights apartments, 7015 S. 38th St., when someone was reported to be checking door handles.

This all took place Thursday morning, with officers arriving on scene around 1:30 to see a van leaving the area and took note of the license plate. The information was relayed to other responding officers, who later found the van near 48th and Hwy 2 occupied by a 15-year-old and 19-year-old, both males.

Officers spoke with witnesses at the apartments and found at least three vehicles had been broken into. Witnesses would later identify the 19-year-old from a photo lineup.

Upon further investigation, Lincoln police found stolen property inside the teens’ van that had been taken from vehicles in the Pine Lake Heights parking lot. Officers are still working to determine if more thefts had occurred.

The 19-year-old was cited for three counts of theft by unlawful taking, while the 15-year-old got a juvenile referral for the same charges and was turned over to a parent.

Lincoln police say this is an excellent example of witnesses speaking up when they notice suspicious activity.
