LPS hosts symposium on diversity in education
Students from across LPS came to listen and engage with educational professionals
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nearly 50 students of color from Lincoln Public Schools who are interested in education were at a symposium on Monday to engage with education professionals of diverse backgrounds.
LPS hopes that the students become more connected with education and wants to empower students to “be the change.”
Lincoln High School junior Tradyshia Abraham explained how diversity in schools can make an impact on kids.
“Diversity will help make an impact on kids because there’s not only 28 students of white kids in classrooms anymore,” she said. “Like, it’s not segregated. It’s more diverse, and I feel like we need more inclusivity in school, so, like, having students that look like me and then them having a teacher that looks like them will give them more confidence in themselves.”
Abraham also said while there is always room to grow, she feels that Lincoln is much better with having teachers of a diverse background than other places she’s lived.
LPS said it wants to ensure diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in and outside of the classrooms.
It believes that getting students of color engaged is the way to do that.
