LPS Scholar Equity Cadre talks with administrators on district’s diversity efforts

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln Public Schools equity group met Thursday with school administrators, staff and community members to talk about the district’s diversity efforts.

The LPS Scholar Equity Cadre is a student-led group focusing on issues of equity, awareness and change in our schools and community.

The students represent schools from across the district and meet regularly to talk about these issues.

“They want to elevate their voices and space that aren’t traditionally put forward for young people,” said Pete Ferguson, LPS coordinator of culture, inclusion and scholar development.

The cadre meets regularly with school staff and administrators to discuss policies that are put in place.

“We are able to give them that perspective, and it’s very important because they respect our opinion,” Emely Chairez said.

The students said there need to be more platforms throughout the district for students to make their voices heard.
