LPS seeking 20-acre annexation for new Student Support Facility in southwest Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Public Schools went before the City Council on Tuesday to request a 20-acre annexation in southwest Lincoln.

The district is a few months away from breaking ground on the $24.8 million Student Support Facility at Folsom Street and Pioneers Boulevard.

The Yankee Hill Education Center is currently teaching students in specialized education programs at that location.

The new facility wouldn’t be a traditional school.

It would be used for students that are part of the Behavioral Skills Program, Student Support Program and the Transitions Program.

“A lot of them are focused on behavioral support so that we can meet those extra needs,” said Brooke Hay, assistant director of operations for LPS.

The school district already owns several acres in the area, but part of the property falls outside city limits.

In this map of the area, the yellow highlighted section shows the 20 acres that would be annexed.

Hay said the annexation would help improve safety for students and staff, especially when it comes to any medical emergencies.

“Our annexation was actually combined with the YMCA Wright’s Park that’s just south of there,” she said. “They’ve been in operation a lot longer, and they do have some stories of calling for assistance and there being some confusion as to who the responders should be. So just being under a single jurisdiction is really important to us.”

The District is planning to break ground in January 2026, with students starting there in August 2027.

The city council is set to vote on the proposal on Oct. 20.
