LTU seeks input from Lincoln residents on flood mitigation plan

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The City of Lincoln wants to hear from residents as it develops its Flood Mitigation Master Plan.
The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District have been developing the plan since 2021.
It outlines the risk of flooding in the community and identifies where there is a potential for flooding.
“As a city, we’ve always wanted to keep the people safe, and flooding is a real concern,” said Tim Zach, LTU’s superintendent of stormwater. “In 2015, we experienced significant flooding. And so we’re always looking at how we can continue to keep people safe and improve.”
Before the plan is finalized, residents are asked to participate in an online survey on potential measures to reduce flood risk. The survey is available until Sunday at lincoln.ne.gov/FloodMitigation.
A public meeting will also take place on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Belmont Recreation Center.
The plan will meet federal requirements that the city said will help reduce federal flood insurance rates by 25% for those who own property in the flood plain.
The plan will also include input from state and federal agencies.
