LTU won’t plow residential roads; one driver says streets are ‘really not that bad’
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The snow emergency in Lincoln expired just before midnight Wednesday.
The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department said crews are working around the clock to get the streets cleared off.
But they will not plow residential streets because LTU thinks the snow will melt in a couple days.
“Our crews have been continuously plowing streets throughout the day during the snowfall,” said Tim Byrne, the maintenance operations manager at LTU. “The system is now moving out of the city, so we will be able to make some positive progress.”

But with how long the snow fell and the strong winds, Lincoln may have some roads covered longer than usual.
Karl, a Nebraska native, said he is pretty used to handling the winter weather drives.
“They’re really not that bad,” he said. “I was out earlier this morning, and they were slippery, but right now, I think they’re fairly good. The road crews have kept up with it. I don’t think it’s bad at all, but you got to have all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.”

Some of the turn lanes were slick Wednesday with a lot of snow buildup and will likely only get worse as the temperature drops.
“That’s a Nebraska thing,” Karl said. “We like to keep everything kind of hidden so you have to guess. Just give it your best shot, try and hope the person in front of you had it right.”
Even with the snow on the ground, Karl told Channel 8 there are more people on the roads than expected.
Another driver, Damon, said he thinks the roads need more work.
“It’s pretty slick in residential areas,” he said. “The interstate seems OK. Hopefully it gets better here.”
