Hazardous material truck fire shuts down I-80 east of Waverly

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A truck carrying a hazardous material caught fire Monday on Interstate 80.

It happened just east of Waverly, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Pictures shared by NDOT show that some flames spread to the ditch.

The Nebraska 511 website initially called the blaze a “major hazardous materials fire.”

But the Nebraska State Patrol said the fire was contained to the cab and no material leaked from the tanker.

No injuries were reported.

I-80 was closed for about 15 miles, from just of Lincoln to the Greenwood exit.

The interstate reopened about 5 p.m., but the patrol said backups continued into the evening.

The state patrol thanked the Waverly Fire/Rescue Department for its quick work.
