Man accused of DUI, manslaughter in deadly crash south of Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man is accused of manslaughter in an October crash near Lincoln that killed a 53-year-old Crete man.

David Warren, 39, was charged Thursday with manslaughter and driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, according to court records.

A Lancaster County judge set Warren’s bond at $750,000.  He must pay $75,000 to be released from jail.

The crash happened on Oct. 28 around 12:30 p.m. near Southwest 14th Street and Highway 33, just south of Lincoln.

An SUV – driven by Warren – clipped the back of a semitrailer, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Warren then lost control and crashed into a pickup truck, driven by 53-year-old Bradley Kreifels, the sheriff’s office said.

Kreifels was pronounced dead at the scene.  Warren and a passenger in the pickup truck were taken to a hospital.

The passenger – Kreifels’ wife – suffered a broken wrist, broken ribs and a fractured left hip, an arrest affidavit says.

During an investigation, deputies found “multiple empty 99 Proof liquor bottles on scene,” according to the affidavit.

An empty 99-proof liquor bottle and an unopened Fireball whiskey shooter were found in Warren’s SUV, the affidavit alleges.

Warren’s blood alcohol content level was 0.176%, according to the affidavit.  The legal limit in Nebraska is 0.08%.

His next court appearance is set for Jan. 19.

Warren has previously been convicted of two DUIs, the affidavit says.
