Man accused of first-degree assault in Grand Island shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man is facing a felony assault charge after an early Monday morning shooting in Grand Island.

The Grand Island Police Department said a 45-year-old man was shot during an argument near West Forrest Street and North Kruse Avenue.

The victim drove to the police station to report the assault.  He was then taken to St. Francis Emergency Department to be treated for his injuries.

Around 10:30 a.m., the suspected shooter — 41-year-old Gerber Perez Vazquez — turned himself in, according to police.

He is facing several charges, including first-degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

The victim is also being charged on suspicion of third-degree assault, according to police.
