Man arrested in deadly stabbing of priest at eastern Nebraska church
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – An Iowa man was arrested Sunday in the fatal stabbing of a priest at an eastern Nebraska church.
Around 5 a.m., dispatchers received a report of an attempted break-in at St. John’s Catholic Church rectory in Fort Calhoun.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Kierre Williams, 43, had stabbed Father Stephen Gutgsell.
Gutgsell was taken to a hospital in Omaha, where he later died from his injuries.
Williams was arrested on suspicion of homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
I have reached out to Archbishop Lucas to offer my condolences regarding the tragic death of Fr. Stephen Gutgsell who died after being assaulted during an invasion at the rectory. Pray for peace and healing in Fort Calhoun and across our world.
