Man caught ‘recklessly’ driving stolen Kia across Lincoln, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A stolen vehicle was recovered Friday after a short chase in north Lincoln, police say.

Last week, a Kia Optima — worth around $14,000 — was reported stolen from a home near 28th and T streets.

The Kia was spotted Friday at a gas station near 23rd and R streets, according to police.

Officers and a Nebraska State Patrol helicopter followed the vehicle as it was “recklessly” driven through Lincoln, police said.

The vehicle stopped near 30th and Apple streets, and the driver — 19-year-old Donavan Garrett — got out and ran away.

Officers caught up to Garrett and took him into custody.

He was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and theft by receiving.
