Man charged in 2022 killing of missing Nebraska woman

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was charged Wednesday in the 2022 killing of a Columbus woman.
Anthony Mattison, 35, is facing four felonies, including first-degree murder and improper disposal of human skeletal remains.
On Oct. 5, 2022, a worker found the body of 25-year-old Jasmine Garnett along a rural road near Harvard, which is 18 miles east of Hastings. She had been missing since Sept. 16.
Prison records indicate that Mattison was on parole at the time of the slaying.
He was sentenced in 2016 for five counts of theft and other charges. Mattison is currently serving time in the Reception and Treatment Center on the same charges.
About a week before Garnett’s body was found, Mattison shot at officers in Hastings, police said.
He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault on an officer and several other offenses.
Last month, he was deemed competent to stand trial in that case after being treated at a mental hospital.
Mattison has a lengthy criminal history, which dates back to when he was 11, according to state court records.
He is now on his fourth prison sentence.
In 2019, he escaped from the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln, which added another one to two years to his term.
The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the homicide investigation.
The case is being prosecuted by the Clay County Attorney’s Office with help from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.
Mattison’s first court appearance in the homicide case is scheduled for May 14. He is due back in Adams County District Court for the Hastings case on May 21.
