Man charged in I-80 rest stop stabbing in Nebraska to have another psych test

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The man accused of a deadly stabbing at an Interstate 80 rest area in Nebraska will undergo another psychological examination.
On Friday, Hall County District Court Judge Andrew Butler ordered James Thompson, 22, of Ohio to be evaluated at the Lincoln Regional Center.
Psychiatrists there will determine whether Thompson is mentally competent to understand the charges against him and to participate in his defense.

In June, a couple from Missouri were stabbed at the I-80 rest area south of Grand Island.
Gary Weaver, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mary Weaver, 71, suffered serious injuries to her head and neck, authorities said.
Court documents say Thompson attacked them while trying to steal the Jeep that was attached to their camper.
Thompson is charged with 11 felonies, including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Thompson already had a psychological evaluation when the case was in Hall County Court.
In October, a judge ruled that he was competent to stand trial.
When the case was transferred to district court, Thompson pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Court documents don’t say why Butler ordered a second competency evaluation.
