Man fired gun at officers after shooting 12-year-old at North Platte home, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man fired a gun at officers Monday after a shooting at a North Platte home, police say.

Around 8 p.m., dispatchers in North Platte received a report of a person being shot at a home near Silber Avenue and C Street.

The victim – a 12-year-old boy – had injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.  He has since been released from the hospital.

Shortly after, a Lincoln County deputy tried pulling over 38-year-old Brandon Girkin Sr., who then fled, police said.

He later stopped, exited the vehicle and fired shots at the deputy, who returned fire, according to police.

Girkin got back into the vehicle, and the deputy resumed the pursuit.  He stopped again at his home and got into another vehicle.

During the chase, Girkin shot at a Nebraska State Patrol trooper, who also returned fire, police said.

Girkin continued north on Highway 83, eventually leaving the road and coming to a stop.

A drone pilot was able to determine that Girkin appeared injured and a firearm was not visible in the vehicle.

Officers approached the vehicle and removed Girkin, who was taken to a local hospital.  A .22 caliber pistol was found inside the vehicle.

Girkin – who had at least two gunshot wounds – was later taken to a Lincoln area hospital, police said.  He is in critical but stable condition.

No law enforcement officers were injured.
