LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man will spend several decades behind bars for the killing of a Lincoln man at Fonner Park last year.

Logan Hunts Horse, 21, was sentenced to 88 to 134 years for second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, according to court records.

Hunts Horse was initially charged with first-degree murder and five other felonies, but the charges were lessened after he entered a plea deal.

On March 9, 2023, the Grand Island Police Department was sent to the horse stables at Fonner Park on a report of a man who was not breathing.

Officers then found 62-year-old Todd Scherer’s body, which had a gunshot wound to the torso, in a tack room.

Police said Hunts Horse shot Scherer once in the stomach.

He later returned to the scene and, discovering that Scherer was still alive, hit him with a baseball bat.

Police said a teenager who was there then stole Scherer’s wallet.

That teen, Austin Kelly, is being tried as an adult.  He has since entered a plea deal and is scheduled to be in court on Aug. 14.
