Man in custody following standoff in northeast Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was arrested Tuesday after a standoff lasting more than three hours in east Lincoln.

Around 6:30 a.m., Lincoln Police and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Task Force went to execute an arrest warrant at 57th Street and Leighton Avenue.

John Helter, 48, was wanted on suspicion of felony theft by shoplifting.

Officials said he also had a felony drug warrant out of Gage County.

The sheriff’s office said Helter refused to leave the home until just before 10 a.m.

He was armed with only a pair of scissors.

Officials said that during the arrest, Helter was bitten by a police dog and is currently at a hospital.

The sheriff’s office said he will be facing further charges.
