Man killed in crash west of Lincoln after attempted traffic stop is identified

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who was killed in a crash Monday night after an attempted traffic stop.

About 8:45 p.m., a deputy tried to pull over a speeding vehicle near Southwest 98th and West O streets.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the driver, 39-year-old Jay Petersen of Lincoln, didn’t stop and turned south on 98th Street.

Shortly after, the vehicle hit a field entrance, causing the vehicle to go in the air.

Petersen was ejected from the vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at the scene, Houchin said.

The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the crash, and the deputy involved in the traffic stop has been placed on administrative leave.

Petersen was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to Houchin.
