Man killed in shooting at apartment near downtown Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at an apartment near downtown Lincoln.

Officers were called to an apartment near 11th and G streets around 12:05 p.m. on a report of a shooting, Police Chief Michon Morrow said.

A 52-year-old man was shot in the head, Morrow said.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man who called police — 53-year-old Jacob Mulloy — turned himself in when officers arrived, according to Morrow.

Mulloy, the resident of the apartment, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

It’s unknown what led up to the shooting, but the two men knew each other, according to Morrow.

A handgun was recovered at the apartment, police said in a press release.

Jamie Belford lives next door.  She said the area is dangerous.

“I call it the hood; most people do,” she said. “A lot of homeless people down here, a lot of druggie people. They go through our trash, they walk up and down the alleyways all the time. We don’t really go out here much, not even on the porch.”

Belford only knew Mulloy in passing, but she said a shooting like this is alarming.

“I went away from Denver, took my kids away from Denver, because I’m not going to have them grow up like this,” she said. “Then to find out that it’s next door? It’s crazy.”

The shooting happened in the jurisdiction of the Lincoln Police Department’s southwest team.

Data show that that part of Lincoln has the highest rate of violent crimes so far in 2024.

And the difference is even more glaring when looking at the five-year average for January through March.

The southwest division is averaging about 75 rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults and homicides.

The other three divisions’ averages all fall in the 40s.

Tuesday’s shooting, the city’s second homicide of 2024, comes just two days after a fatal shooting outside a bar.

There were eight homicides in 2023, compared with 11 in 2022.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
