Man scammed by person posing as ICE employee, Lincoln Police say

Scam Generic

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department is investigating a scam involving someone impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement employee.

Around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to speak with the victim, a 40-year-old man currently in the United States under a valid visa.

The victim received a call from someone who identified themselves as an ICE employee.

According to the police department, the scammer told the victim his file was incomplete and threatened him with fines, detainment and deportation if he did not comply.

The victim received another call from someone claiming to be an attorney assigned to assist him with this matter.

LPD said the victim was told to provide personal identifying information, cryptocurrency information, and to purchase specific gift cards for payment for services.

Government services will not accept — and will not ask for — any payment in cryptocurrency or gift cards.

If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of a call, end the call immediately and research the agency’s phone number.
