Man sentenced to prison for spring shootout in Lincoln’s Railyard

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man will spend at least five years in prison for an April shooting in the Railyard that left two vehicles riddled with bullet holes.
On Tuesday, Lancaster County District Judge Darla Ideus sentenced 34-year-old Louis Benson to 10 to 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
The sentence will automatically be cut in half due to Nebraska’s good time law.
Around 2 a.m. on April 2, a 911 caller reported hearing several gunshots near R and Canopy streets.
When officers arrived, they found two vehicles with bullet holes and about 70 shell casings from two different handguns, according to police.
Officers then spoke with Benson, who was in one of the damaged vehicles. Police said he had a Glock handgun with him.
After an investigation, police found that several of the shell casings came from Benson’s gun.
Investigators think the shooting was gang-related, according to an arrest affidavit.
Benson was prohibited from having a firearm due to a felony conviction in 2013, according to police.
Marvin Wright, 30, was also charged in the shooting in September. His next court appearance is set for Dec. 19.
