Update: Man sets himself on fire at a Beatrice gas station

Beatrice Police were called around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday after a man doused himself in gasoline then lit himself on fire.

It happened at the Cenex convenience store in north Beatrice.

Police say a 27–year–old man walked to the gas station wearing only a pair of jeans then held the nozzle over his head, lit himself on fire, then went for more gas.

“Alertly, the clerk that was working at Cenex shut the power off to the pumps so he was not able to do that,” Police Chief Bruce Lang said.

Police say the man then went inside the store and cut himself in the chest and neck with scissors and ice scrapers.

Officers arrived on scene and had to taser the man twice before he was life–flighted to a Lincoln hospital with life–threatening injuries.

They say the man is a mechanical engineer who works in Iowa. They don’t know why he was in Beatrice but say they found his car in a ditch over the weekend but he was no where to be found.

“With no history of mental illness…usually when someone gets to this point where they’re going to do something that horrific, usually there’s some history building up to that and there doesn’t appear to be any here.”

On Monday afternoon in Lincoln, a woman jumped to her death from a parking garage near 11th and N St.

Police say anyone feeling this kind of despair can always reach out for help.

“There is help out there for you. Just let us know or let your local law enforcement or local mental health organizations know and they can usually get something lined up to help you.”

Police continue to investigate.

The man went into surgery Tuesday morning. His condition at this point is unknown.
