Man shot by authorities at northwest Lincoln Casey’s is identified
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who was shot by authorities Tuesday at a Casey’s in northwest Lincoln.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Wednesday that 45-year-old Michael Glaser was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree assault on an officer, use of a weapon to commit a felony and two counts of false imprisonment.
Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Glaser walked into Casey’s at Northwest 12th Street and West Cornhusker Highway and set a gun on the counter, the Lincoln Police Department said.
The sheriff’s office said the incident was “domestic related” and not a robbery.
Glaser is separated from his wife, who works at the store, according to Houchin. But the woman wasn’t working there Tuesday night.
“We’ve had reports before that they’ve had issues in their relationship,” Houchin said. “I will say that.”
Glaser shot at the first officer who arrived, according to Police Chief Michon Morrow. That officer returned fire.
Two more officers and a Nebraska State Patrol trooper arrived shortly after and continued exchanging gunfire, officials said.
Two employees at the store barricaded themselves in a back room during the shootout.
Glaser was eventually shot in the upper chest before the SWAT team took him into custody.
No officers, customers or employees were injured.
The two officers and the trooper who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave.
Morrow said LPD will release the names of the officers within the next few days.
“It won’t be today,” she said. “Generally we wait, and that is to provide opportunities for our officers involved to speak with their families and prepare them for the release.”
Col. John Bolduc, superintendent of the patrol, said the agency will not release the name of the trooper involved.
“That’s not our policy,” he said. “It has not been our policy for as long as we’ve had policy manuals, and that’s not going to change any time soon.”
Glaser was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said. He has since been released and lodged in the Lancaster County Jail.
Investigators also searched Glaser’s home and found a short shotgun, according to Houchin. He could face additional charges for that.
