Man shot by officer at north Lincoln hotel; police say he rammed cruiser, ran over woman
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was shot Tuesday by a Lincoln Police officer at a hotel, police say.
Around 12:20 p.m., an officer approached 35-year-old Garrett Hanika, who was in a Jeep at the Microtel near 25th and Fairfield streets.
Hanika was wanted on a federal warrant out of Councils Bluffs, Iowa, according to the Lincoln Police Department.
Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow said Hanika reversed and crashed into a police cruiser.
Hanika also tried to run over an officer, who fired his gun, striking him, police said.
At some point, a woman got out of the vehicle, and the man ran her over, according to Morrow.
The woman was taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Hanika was also treated for minor injuries.
The officer was not injured and has since been placed on administrative leave.
After being medically cleared, Hanika was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault on an officer.
An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
