Man stole cigarettes, kratom after breaking into Lincoln smoke shop, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man broke into an east Lincoln smoke shop Wednesday and took off with cigarettes, police say.

Around 2:30 a.m., officers were sent to Midwest Smoke Shop near 48th and O streets after an alarm went off.

Officers found the store’s rear glass door broken and a large rock lying on the ground, police said.

Surveillance video showed 39-year-old Matthew Stinson throwing the rock and kicking the window several times.

An employee told officers that packages of cigarettes and kratom, worth around $67, were missing.

Kratom is “an herbal substance that can produce opioid- and stimulant-like effects,” according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

About an hour later, officers found Stinson near 45th and O streets.  He initially gave officers a fake name, according to police.

Stinson was arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal impersonation.
