Man test-drove SUV before stealing it from Lincoln dealership, affidavit says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man tried out an SUV before stealing it last month from an east Lincoln dealership, court documents say.

On March 7, 33-year-old Devin Weldon walked into Oak Auto Sales near 70th and Fremont streets and asked to test-drive some vehicles.

Weldon drove a GMC Canyon for about 15 minutes before taking a Chevy Tahoe for a spin, according to an arrest affidavit.

Weldon was gone for about an hour because he wanted to show the Tahoe to his wife, the affidavit alleges.

He apologized to the seller and left the business.  Security video captured Weldon wearing a gray “Champions” sweatshirt and dark sunglasses.

Two days later, the Chevy was reported stolen.

Surveillance video showed Weldon crouching behind other vehicles to avoid the camera’s field of view, the affidavit says.

He got into the Chevy, shut off the alarm and drove off, according to the affidavit.  Investigators think Weldon was “familiar” with the camera system and had a key to the Chevy.

On March 16, officers found the Chevy at an apartment complex near 14th Street and Fletcher Avenue.

Inside, officers found the hoodie and sunglasses Weldon was wearing when he tested out the Tahoe, the affidavit alleges.

Investigators were able to identify Weldon, and he was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony theft.

A Lancaster County judge set his bond at $50,000.  He must pay $5,000 to be released.
