Man who fired gun at troopers in Grand Island is charged with attempted homicide

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The man who fired a gun at troopers on Wednesday amid a child pornography investigation in Grand Island has been charged.

In a press release Thursday, the Nebraska State Patrol said 43-year-old Justin Jelinek was charged on suspicion of attempted homicide, attempted first-degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer.

Investigators with the patrol’s technical crimes unit served a warrant at Jelinek’s home in Grand Island as part of child pornography investigation on Wednesday.

As investigators tried to serve the search warrant, 43-year-old Justin Jelinek fired a gun from inside the home, according to police.

A trooper shot back, but no one was hit by gunfire, the patrol said.

Jelinek eventually came out of the home and was taken into custody.

During a search of the home, troopers found 20 firearms and over 5,000 rounds of ammo, according to the patrol.  An investigation is ongoing.
