Matt Rhule says ‘good quarterback’ in transfer portal would cost up to $2 million
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska football’s season ended Friday after a misthrown pass caught by an Iowa defender.
The Huskers’ three quarterbacks – Chubba Purdy, Heinrich Haarberg and Jeff Sims – were responsible for myriad turnovers this year.
It’s not yet known if the Huskers will look for another QB in the transfer portal during the offseason.
If Nebraska does, it will cost the program a pretty penny due to name, image and likeness.
“Make no mistake that a good quarterback in the portal costs, you know, a million, to $1.5 million to $2 million right now,” Matt Rhule said Wednesday.
The price won’t stop Nebraska from at least looking at its options.
But Rhule said the Huskers “believe in doing things like the old-school way” by developing the players they already have.
“When I go back and look at our quarterbacks this year, obviously you know, everyone can look at the negatives, the turnovers and all those things,” he said. “I also see a lot of positives.”
Rhule wondered if Purdy, who started in Nebraska’s final two games, could’ve benefitted from more playing time.
He also said Haarberg, who was given the starting job in eight games, wasn’t even allowed in quarterback meetings last year.
“I just think with further development — those guys have two years left — I think they’re going to be good players,” Rhule said.
