Mild for a majority the week; breezy this Monday
About this time three years ago, a highly unusual, late tornado outbreak/derecho happened across Nebraska on December 15. Several tornadoes spawned from a powerful low-pressure system and tore through central and eastern Nebraska.
There were 27 tornadoes surveyed across the state from that day, including one closer to Lincoln. The entire line of storms produced 120 tornadoes in total that day.
One tornado formed just southeast of Dorchester in the afternoon, lasting about 18 minutes. Peak winds of 118 mph were estimated from the damage to irrigation pivots, grain bins, barns and outbuildings, then given an EF-2 rating.
Recent weather was hectic with freezing rain this past Friday into Saturday morning, but we’ve dried out over the weekend thanks to highs in the lower 50s on Sunday.
We’ll start out this week with similar mild conditions on Monday.
Highs will be nearing the lower 50s once more across southeast Nebraska.
This is very warm for mid-December: most of us will be about 10-15 degrees warmer than normal! Normal highs are closer to the upper 30s at this time of year.
There will be some stronger winds to brace for especially closer to South Dakota by late morning Monday. Gusts will be pushing about 40 mph up that way, meanwhile those closer to I-80 will have gusts peaking around 35 mph.
Most of this week we’ll be quite warm. Temperatures in the 40s and 50s every day, outside of Wednesday and Friday when temperatures will be more seasonal.
The upcoming stretch toward the end of the month continues to look fairly dry as well… little to no precipitation chances in the future.
