More storms possible to close out the week
It is a much quieter start on Thursday in eastern Nebraska. Many are waking up to sunny skies, and that is helping to generate areas of locally dense fog. Any fog should burn off fairly quickly as the morning progresses.
However, not everyone saw sunshine. Showers are storms were underway in western Nebraska during the overnight hours. These will move into southeast Nebraska by late Thursday morning and into the afternoon.
Given the rain chance, we have scaled back on high temperatures by a few degrees. We’re now looking at middle-80s for highs in Lincoln along with mostly cloudy skies at times. That said, a few locations may reach the low-90s depending on how rain and cloud cover track through the area.
While showers may continue through the afternoon in southeast Nebraska, things will dry out in western parts of the state. At least that will be the case until late afternoon or early evening when new storms form.
The lull in storm activity for western Nebraska will allow the air to destabilize during the day. This enhances the severe weather risk to the west, where we see a slight (Level 2/5) risk for severe weather. Very large hail, damaging straight-line winds, and an isolated tornado are possible.
Meanwhile, the daytime showers that move through southeast Nebraska will stabilize the air. This limits the severe weather threat on Thursday in eastern Nebraska.
Friday will be a very similar day weather-wise. More storms will be possible, and highs should be in the mid-80s. However, storm chances depart by Saturday. We’ll be left with mostly sunny skies and a high near 90° to start the weekend.
