More storms Tuesday evening into early Wednesday, slightly cooler
Much of the state went under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Monday evening, with one tornado reported in western Nebraska and tons of hail and damaging wind.
The strongest wind gusts in and around Lincoln reported from last night were:
- 51-mph gust (Lincoln airport)
- 61-mph gust (Seward)
- 63-mph gust (Greenwood)
Clouds and more thunderstorms in the forecast will keep temperatures cooler for a couple days.
Stronger thunderstorms will try to organize first out in western Nebraska Tuesday afternoon. As that wave makes the journey toward central and eastern Nebraska, it is largely expected to weaken. Lingering storms will last through the morning commute on Wednesday.
Most of the state is within either a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk or a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for storm potential Tuesday afternoon and night.
- Slight risk (yellow) = scattered severe storms possible across western Nebraska
- Marginal risk (green) = isolated (fewer) severe storms possible in central and eastern Nebraska
Hail will be one of the primary threats with these storms.
The other threat will be damaging wind across similar areas with the higher probability (15 percent within 25 miles of a point) as to the risk for hail.
With the true nature of thunderstorms, rain totals through noon on Wednesday are expected to be all over the place. If you’re caught directly under these storms, you’ll likely end up on the higher end of rain totals.
These cooler days will not last long at all. Dangerously hot days are in the forecast for Friday and this upcoming weekend – likely our first heat indices in the lower 100s.
