‘Most important holiday’: Lincoln Memorial Cemetery holds ceremony for Memorial Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — United by gratitude for those who never made it home.

The community came together Monday at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery to pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for our country.

The ceremony included the presentation of the color guard, the placing of the wreath and battlefield cross, ringing of the LFR Honor Guard bell and several guest speakers.

Lieutenant Colonel Margaret Ingerslew told Channel 8 sometimes people forget why today is a holiday, and she wants people to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“This is by far the most important holiday,” she said. “I know a lot of people see it as a great three-day weekend that we have, but these services and ceremonies really hone in on the fact that today is about those that have given their lives. It’s so important that we remember them and cherish them and honor what they have done for our country.”

She said one of her goals is keeping the memories alive of those who paved the way for others.

“I think we are doing a lot better about speaking about all of those wars, all of those sacrifices that are made,” she said. “And for someone like me to be here today; a female officer in the Air Force. I stand on the shoulders of giants, and those are the giants that made our country what it is today and give us the privilege of wearing this uniform and serving today.”

And after sharing her story, Ingerslew said the community is expressing their support in many different ways.

“Everything from thanks for remembering the folks that were serving in World War II, the Vietnam veterans, the people that have a grandson that’s serving right now,” she said. “I had a really excited 16-year-old who ran up and told me she wants to join the Air Force. Everything from somber reverence and remembrance to just excitement for serving the country.”
