Motorcycle safety courses ‘maxed out’ so Nebraskans can ride helmetless
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Interest in motorcycle safety training courses has skyrocketed at the Nebraska Safety Council.
On Monday, it became law that motorcyclists could ride without a helmet, provided they comply with a few rules.
They must be at least 21 years old, have protective eye gear and take a safety training course.
“We are planning – with this helmet repeal – to offer multiple classes in a weekend to be able to meet the demand,” said John Lefler Jr., the executive director of the Nebraska Safety Council.

Lefler said after the law passed in 2023, the interest in training immediately went up.
“We basically were maxed out for every course that we offered,” Lefler said. “And it was a lot of people that, yes, were trying to get that Beginner Rider Course card so that they could ride without a helmet.”
But more than anything, Lefler said many people just wanted to know how to safely operate a motorcycle.
Each class can only fit six students, and the training only runs from April to October.
It costs $275, but once complete, you don’t have to renew it.
The safety council also provides motorcycles and helmets for those who attend.
Lefler said there’s been confusion surrounding the new law.
“There’s also been a number of folks that have been riding for a lot of years, and I think there’s some confusion about why they have to have this card,” he said.
If you took the course before the state gave out certification cards, you will have to take it again to go helmetless.
Lefler said the training helps everyone be safer on the roads.
“We adopt the idea of riding like you’re invisible,” he said. “They talk about defensive driving. That really is tenfold for those that ride motorcycles.”
Lefler still urges people to wear a helmet, as it greatly decreases the chances of serious injuries if you’re in a crash.
“If you’re educated on how to keep yourself safe, it makes the entire experience more enjoyable,” he said.
